Law allows for ambulance transport for police dogs

A new state law aimed at getting police dogs faster emergency treatment is now on the books.

Carfentanil. The powerful opioid addition, is the first thing that pops to mind when the Illinois State Police talk about a new law that will allow ambulances to rush police dogs to emergency treatment.

Governor Rauner signed the new law at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield with a State Police K9 at his side.

Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz says there are times when a State Trooper doesn't have everything they need to save their K9 partner.

Schmitz says State Police K9's are legally treated just the same as human troopers.
