Iroquois County votes ‘No’ to marijuana sales

It was a unanimous vote. The Iroquois County Board (Tuesday) voted against any recreational marijuana sales in the un-incorporated areas. A motion was passed to prohibit establishing any sales or for the manufacture of such products in rural areas.

The matter has stirred a lot of opinions… pro and con … in many areas of the state as the new Illinois allowing such recreational marijuana sales becomes law January 1. The pro and con brings up questions about the added problems for law enforcement, among other things.

Several other municipalities are also weighing in on the issue. Many communities are yet to act on whether they’ll allow recreational sales of pot, despite the added revenues sales bring. Decisions remain up in the air for allowing sales and setting ordinances for a tax on the marijuana retail outlets.

The state -- meanwhile – is reporting recreational marijuana sales have totaled in the neighborhood of $1.6 million during the first week of pot sales business in Michigan. Revenues in the state since December 1 show five retail shops generated about $270, 400 in new revenue.
