Watseka Motorist Air-lifted after Crash

SHELDON --  A 36-year-old Watseka man was injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday in Sheldon Township.  Brent McTaggart was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka, then air-lifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana.

McTaggart's condition was unknown Saturday evening.

Iroquois County Sheriff's Police report McTaggart's vehicle hit a bridge and overturned landing in a field.

The accident happened on County Road 1400 N near 2820 E.  The accident remained under investigation.

Former Herscher Bank Exec in more trouble

There’s more legal problems for a former Herscher bank executive. 42-year-old David Rabideau (Rab-i-due) of Clifton is charged with filing a false income tax return. The charges came to light in U.S. Federal Court in Urbana.

Rabideau was already facing federal charges for allegedly taking a $75,000 kick-back in connection with a real estate loan. The Urbana Court records state Rabideau failed to report $50,000 on his 2006 taxes and $120,000 on his 2007 taxes.

Rabideau is a former loan officer and Vice-President of the State Bank of Herscher.

Newton County crash kills Brook man

A Brook, Indiana man died Thursday afternoon after his pickup truck drove off State Road 16 and hit a tree.

63-year-old Larry Strole drove off the roadway on the south side of the road. Newton County Sheriff’s officers found Strole unconscious in the vehicle. He died later at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer..

The initial investigation indicates Strole was westbound when his pickup truck left the road, struck a guardrail and utility pole and came to rest against a tree.

Brook and Goodland Fire departments and Newton County Ambulance personnel assisted at the scene.

State Police Announce Roadside Safety Checks

Ashkum, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP), District 21, will conduct a Roadside Safety Check (RSC) in Kankakee County during the Fourth weekend in April, according to Captain Bridget Bertrand.

The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois. Officers working this detail will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages, or Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Alcohol and drug impairment is a significant factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. RSCs are designed to keep our roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road. This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

Champaign Fire leads to Murder Charge

Champaign Police say a man has been arrested on murder charges in connection with a fatal fire Friday at an apartment complex. Thirty-one year old Terry Brownlee of Champaign faces murder charges for the death of a female who died in the fire.

The Champaign County Coroner says the name of the victim is being withheld pending an autopsy on Saturday and positive identification.  
Brownlee had been staying at the apartment in the 400-block of South State. The female who died did not stay there. Police say the suspect and victim knew each other.  

Champaign firefighters discovered the victim after responding to the fire shortly after 6 am.

The State Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation into the tragedy. Ther was no other injury. Two other apartments in the complex were affected. Residents in all but those two of the apartments were allowed to return to their apartments.
