Milford Bearcats prep for Sectional at Danville

Decatur Lutheran is up next for the Milford Bearcats Boys basketball team. After clipping rival Cissna Park in overtime Friday for the 1A Reg'l C-ship at Armstrong, Milford moves on to Sectional play Tuesday at Danville Schlarman.

The post season excitement continues after the I-W Lady Raiders brought home a 1A 4th place trophy from the state finals at ISU. And the Lady Irish at McNamara captured a state C-ship in 2A play at ISU.

WCHS Inspiration Award Recipients recognized this week; Watseka Homecoming

The 2013 Watseka Community High School Inspiration Award recipients are being honored this week. The 103rd Annual WCHS Alumni Reunion and Banquet is Saturday, September 14th.

The 2013 honorees include: Athletic winners Victor Sampson, Bruce Sullivan, and the 1962-63 Men's Warrior "Sweet 16" Basketball Team. The Academic recipient is David Bergstrom.

The awards will be given out during the 103rd Annual WCHS Alumni Reunion and Banquet Saturday. The honorees will also be recognized during the Homecoming Football game Friday evening when the Warriors host St Thomas More.

Racing Hall-of-Famer Dick Potts dies

                                     2006 National Dirt Late Model Hall-of-Fame inductee

Racing legend Dick Potts, of Morocco, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette. It is finally revealed that Dick was 76 years old, as it was a running joke that Dick would not tell his age.

Richard R. "Dick" Potts was born in Goodland on November 3, 1937. He was a lifelong resident of Newton County. Dick served his country for three years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Son of the American Legion, a member of American Legion Post #29 of Rensselaer and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

Dick started racing in 1960, and #92 had 521 feature wins in his 51 years of racing. He raced at dirt tracks all over the area, as well traveling the country with racing circuits. He was the winningest driver at the Rensselaer Raceway. During his career he had 23 Track Championships, 33 Runner-up Championships, was 7-time Northern Indiana Clay Track Champion, 7-time Illiana Clay Track Champion, and 2-time Eastern Illinois Clay Track Champion. Dick was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2006.

Survivors include his wife,Tressie, and nine children:
Rick (Connie) Potts, Linda Potts, Dickie Potts, Cathy (Mike) Pruitt, Kris Potts, and Peggy (Bob) Rusher, all of Indiana; and Ilene (George) Winder, Sarah (Kenny) Sprouse, and Cindy (Jay) Price, all of Virginia. 20+ grandchildren, 20+ great-grandchildren, five brothers and one sister also survive.

Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 2-7:30 p.m. (CST) at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Steinke Funeral Home of Rensselaer on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

North Newton 48, South Newton 42

KENTLAND – Sam Thomas' 3-yard touchdown run capped a back-and-forth fourth quarter for the visiting Spartans.

South Newton jumped out to a 21-0 lead on two 4-yard touchdown runs by Trevor Lowe and Skylar Sanders' 45-yard dash. Jonno Bigger fueled a 21-0 run by North Newton with a 30-yard touchdown run and two TD passes. Sanders gave the Rebels a 28-21 halftime lead with his 17-yard reception from John Dafcik.

Dafcik threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and Bigger finished with four TD passes.

The First Trust and Savings Bank in Watseka & Clifton Player of the Week is sophomore QB Jono Bigger of the North Newton Spartans. With his club down 21-0 after 1 quarter, Bigger led a furious comeback, finishing 27 of 38 passing for 368 yards, including 3 TD passes, and 2 TD runs, as N. Newton won a wild season opener in Kentland over rival S. Newton, 48-42.
