THE FIRST TRUST & SAVINGS BANK IN WATSEKA AND CLIFTON PLAYER OF THE WEEK (ENDING 12/7/13) IS SENIOR GUARD DEVIN CURRY OF WATSEKA LADY WARRIOR BASKETBALL.

STARTING HER 4TH YEAR FOR THE 6-0 WARRIORS, ONE OF ILLINOIS CLASS 2A'S TOP TEAMS, DEVIN IS OFF TO A RED-HOT START. AT THE TIP-OFF CLASSIC IN NOVEMBER, DEVIN SCORED 21 OR MORE POINTS IN EACH OF THE 5 GAMES, MAKING ALL-TOURNAMENT, AND LEADING THE WARRIORS TO WIN THE CLASSIC. ALSO, THIS PAST THURSDAY, SHE SCORED ANOTHER 23 POINTS AND 4 THREE-POINTERS IN A DOMINATING WIN OVER MOMENCE.

Momence loses heartbreaker 34-33

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, THE MOMENCE REDSKINS HOSTED THE STERLING NEWMAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC COMETS IN THE CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS.  THE COMETS JUMP IN FRONT 14-0 IN THE FIRST ON SHORT TD RUNS BY DILLAN HEFFELFINGER AND JAKE SNOW.

IN THE 2ND, MOMENCE'S AARON CANTWELL GOT HIS CLUB ON THE BOARD WITH A 25-YD TD PASS TO ZACH HAMANN. THE
COMETS GO UP 22-7 ON A BRADY RUDE TD RUN, BUT THE REDSKINS' AARON CANTWELL HIT BLAKE LAWRENCE FROM 17 YARDS OUT JUST BEFORE HALF. COMETS LEAD 22-13.

LATE IN THE 3RD, THE COMETS' JAKE SNOW SCORED FROM 2 YARDS OUT, BUT JUST A MINUTE LATER, THE REDSKINS' AARON CANTWELL HIT ZACH HAMANN, THIS TIME FROM 58 YARDS OUT FOR A TD. REDSKINS STILL TRAILED 28-20.

A SHORT TD RUN FROM THE COMETS' DILLAN HEFFELFINGER PUT THE COMETS UP 34-20 EARLY IN THE 4TH. THEN AT THE 1:43 MARK AARON CANTWELL HIT TRE SPEARS FROM 30 YARDS OUT, COMETS NOW LED 34-27.

GINO WENDES RECOVERED AN ONSIDE KICK FOR MOMENCE, AND AT THE 43 SECOND MARK CANTWELL, WITH HIS 5TH TD PASS OF THE DAY, HIT SPEARS AGAIN FROM 14 YARDS OUT TO PULL WITHIN 1 POINT. MOMENCE GOES FOR 2, CANTWELL WITH A QUICK PASS TO JESSE FULWILEY BUT THE COMETS STOP HIM AT THE 2. MOMENCE TRIED 1 LAST ONSIDE KICK, BUT IT FAILED, AND THE COMETS WIN 34-33.

SO 11-1 STERLING NEWMAN WILL HOST 11-1 ALEDO MERCER COUNTY NEXT WEEKEND IN THE 2A STATE SEMIS, WHILE MOMENCE ENDS THEIR SEASON AT 8-4.

Momence FB advances to Q'Finals; Watseka VB season ends

MOMENCE 21, SPRING VALLEY HALL 13:  LeAnthony Reasnover 137 yards rushing; Aaron Cantwell 112 yards passing, TD pass to Zach Hamann.  Jesse Fulwiley 36 yd TD run; Gino Wendes 27 yd TD run, INT, fumble recovery.  Momence goes to 8-3, and will host 10-1 Sterling Newman Central Catholic Sat. Nov. 16 at 2pm in the Class 2A Quarterfinals.  All the action can be heard on 94.1 WGFA and wgfaradio.com.

Also Sat. 11/9--Class 3A:  Winnebago 27, Bishop McNamara 12.  Class 7A: Edwardsville 42, Bradley-Bourbonnais 0.  Class 4A:  Quincy Notre Dame 23, Peotone 14.

WATSEKA VOLLEYBALL came to an end Thursday 11/7 at the 2A El Paso Gridley Sectional Title game, as the Lady Warriors lost 25-18, 25-21 to the Fieldcrest Lady Knights.  Taylor Bauer 15 kills, Hayley Gray 7 kills & 1 block, Maddie Pfingsten 25 assists, Natalie Castonguay 13 digs in defeat for Watseka.  The Warriors finish 32-4, the 3rd straight 30-plus win season for the program.

Herscher Boys Soccer Finish 2nd in 1A

Saturady 11/2, The Herscher boys soccer team lost to Waterloo (Gibault Catholic) 2-1 in the IHSA Class 1A championship game at the Corn Crib in Normal, IL.  Herscher's Colton Walter scored midway thru the first half to give Herscher a 1-0 lead, but about 4 minutes later, Wes Degener scored a game-tying goal.  Finally at the 47:56 mark of the 2nd half, Waterloo's Andrew Reinholz scored what proved to be the state-clincher.  Herscher ended their season at 23-5-1.

The day before, Herscher beat Genoa-Kingston 4-1 Genoa-Kingston in a Class 1A semifinal match.  After trailing 1-0 early on, Mitchell Schwarzkopf and Brody Ryan both scored 2 goals in the Herscher win at the Corn Crib.

Chicago (FW Parker) beat Genoa-Kingston 6-0 in the 1A third-place game Saturday.  The Class 2A and 3A boys soccer finals will be held Nov. 8 and 9, at Hoffman Estates High School.
