Pembroke Township gains broadband funding, infrastructure upgrades

Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly was a bearer of good news (Wed) for folks in Pembroke Township. She presented a $3-million check to Hopkins Park Mayor Mark Hodge. That check will help deliver broadband internet service to the community in Kankakee County.

Broadband service and infrastructure improvements are long over do in the community.

At the Hopkins Park Library, Mayor Hodge said this check is a great learning experience for our children here. The hope is to have infrastructure service improvements for internet service quickly and bring our community into the 21st century, the Mayor said.

The $3-million grant is administered thru the DCEO.

Congressman Kelly’s office was assisted by others present including: Pembroke Township Supervisor Sam Payton, State Rep. Jackie Haas, and State Sen. Patrick Joyce.

Kelly’s press release stated, the project would extend access to approximately 850 residences, businesses, and community anchor institutions throughout the entire 52-square-mile Pembroke Township footprint.

“Pembroke is a very rural, historically impoverished, and dramatically under-served community that lacks communications and energy infrastructure, including wireline broadband, cellular, and natural gas,” she said in the release.
