The snowfall throughout Illiana left most roads a mess. Clean-up efforts are undrway and will continue into the weekend. Snow plows have been hampered by blowing & drifting snow. Icy roads have been frozen and some routes are dealing with flooding.
Motorists are asked to avoid problem areas and leave room for the State, County and Township road crews to get roads cleared. The Papineau Township area has barricaded 2200 E, frozen pond waters have roughed-up that area. Old Route 45 between Clifton and Chebanse was also closed (Thursday).
Un-official reports of snowfall had the brunt of the winter storm moving across east-central Illinois into NW Indiana. Snow measurements range from 5 to 10+ inches.
Chatsworth has 5.2 inches on the ground, Pontiac and Streator measured 6+ with parts of Kankakee and Iroquois County with 6 – 10 inches.
NW Indiana communities and county officials report 6-10 inches. Indiana State Police say white-out conditions led to jack-knifed semis along I-65. Several sections of the Interstate were forced to close. Travel was not advised.
A multi-vehicle pile-up on I-39 north of El Paso still has Illinois State Police and other emergency crews on the scene. Several travelers were forced into shelters.
River Watchers are keeping an eye on the Kankakee and Iroquois River levels and Sugar Creek.
