The death of State Senator Scott Bennett has stunned the legislative community and central-Illinois. Family, friends and colleagues are morning the unexpected death of the 52nd District Senator from Champaign. He died Friday at Carle Hospital in Urbana. He was just 45 years old.
Bennett died of complications from a brain tumor. His wife, Stacy, has expressed her gratitude for the prayers and his end-of-life care at Carle. She is asking for privacy for the family. The death came just 34 hours after first responders were called to the Bennett home around 3 am Thursday.
Besides his wife, Stacy, Senator Bennett is also survived by his twin children, Emma and Sam.
A native of Gibson City, Senator Bennett earned his undergraduate degree from ISU, then attended rthe U of I College of Law. He worked in private practice in Urbana and as an assistant State's Attorney in McLean and Champaign County.
Colleagues praised his work across the political aisle. He just recently was instrumental in working out an agreement with the SAFE-T-Act, recently signed by the Governor. Governor Pritzker has ordered flags across the state to be lowered in his honor.
