Hoopeston Firestone Building razed after fire

Fire crews from Hoopeston and a half-dozen area departments battled a blaze (Tuesday) at the former Firestone Building at Illinois Route 1 and Penn Street.  No injuries were reported, but the remaining building had to be torn down for safety reasons, according to Hoopeston Fire Chief Joel Bird.

There's a boil order for a section of Hoopeston until further notice.  The boil order is for the Greater Hoopeston Area, including North 6th Avenue to Main Street to W. Thompson Avenue.  (Trego Drive is not included).

Firemen found the structure fully-involved, flames and smoke were shooting from the building. Flames kept re-igniting and Hoopeston firemen were called back to the scene after 10 pm.  Crews were on the scene at 215 S. Dixie Highway for several hours after the initial call about 1:20 pm.  A demolition crew was called in to take the building down.

The cause was under investigation.  Chief Bird said with cold weather settling in, it's a good time to inspect furnances and be careful with space-heaters.
