Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey is among four Illinois sheriffs who have filed a joint lawsuit in U.S. District Court seeking a preliminary and hopefully a permanent injunction against state Trust Act. The Ogle, McHenry and Stephenson county sheriffs are also joining the lawsuit against the Illinois attorney general over the TRUST Act. The suit claims that the act intended to protect immigrants oversteps its bounds. The sheriffs say that the TRUST Act doesn't allow law enforcement to hold illegal immigrants for federal authorities, which they say conflicts with federal immigration law. An attorney with the ACLU Illinois says the detainer requests are not requirements.
