Illinois Chief Justice Rita Garman wants to focus on education in her three-year term.

Chief Justice Garman took the post in October and on Thursday she laid out her agenda before members of the Chicago Bar Association. Supreme Court Director of Communications Joseph Tybor said she is asking lawyers to make public education efforts part of their work, especially if members of the media report case information incorrectly or get terminology wrong.

Chief Justice Garman also wants improved educational programs for judges.

Chief Justice Garman also cited a need to continue emphasizing civility and professionalism in the legal profession, improved technology, continuing to with the cameras and microphones in the courtroom trial, and prompt judicial decision-making.

Chief Justice Garman also quoted U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor who said, "We don't accomplish anything in this world alone. Whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something."

Chief Justice Garman said improvement in the system is going to take the work and cooperation of everyone. {article submitted}
