The expansion of the already-existing Kankakee River Conservancy District is being addressed at Town Hall meetings this week. Officials are trying to clear the air about any issues, questions people have about the matter. Property taxes – who pays, who doesn’t – is the bone of contention.
Kankakee County voters who live within 1 to 2 miles of the river will have a referendum question on the March 17 ballot. . If approved, those residents would begin paying an additional property tax. And some residents now living within the current conservancy district are already paying a tax. The district, as it is now, exists along 8 miles of the river between the Indiana-Illinois state line and Momence.
A Town Hall meeting was held Tuesday evening at the Kankakee Boat Club. A second-meeting is today (Wed) at Momence Village Hall at 6 pm. A third-meeting is at the Aroma Park Boat Club at 6 pm Thursday.
