Gov. Pritzker activates Guard

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has activated hundreds of Illinois National Guardsmen to assist Chicago Police in the ongoing protests that have turned into violent looting. Hundreds of thousands of protesters have gathered in metropolitan areas across the nation in reaction to George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. Pritzker announced 375 guardsmen who are specialized military policemen trained in crowd control will assist Chicago police but will only be there in a supporting role.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the protests started peaceful but another element arrived with the aim of mass looting. Lightfoot imposed a nightly curfew Saturday that is still in place.

Several other communities have imposed curfews.  Kankakee County sheriff's personnel also issued an advisory to keep people home for precautionary reasons.
