Authorities say it was a fiery head-on collision along Illinois route 9 in Vermilion County Wednesday that left a Hoopeston man dead. 30-year-old Elizandro Solis Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, according to County Coroner Peggy Johnson.
Sheriff’s Police report an eastbound car crossed the center line shortly after 1:30 pm and struck a west-bound semi tractor trailer. Police say the tractor portion of the truck burst into flames following impact, but the driver of the truck escaped serious injuries.
Deputies closed Illinois route 9 for several hours Wednesday as they investigated. The highway has since been reopened to traffic.
The Coroner says an autopsy is scheduled today.
