Pembroke Votes No to School Tax Hike

Voters inside Pembroke Community School District 259 Tuesday voted down a property-tax hike school officials said was necessary to keep the district's only school open next year.

Of the 426 votes cast in the Pembroke portion of the school district, nearly 79 percent voted against more than doubling their property taxes that go toward education.

School officials warned Lorenzo R. Smith School might not survive another school year.
