Long-time Iroquois County Sheriff Joe Mathy of Chebanse has died. He passed away Wednesday evening at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Manteno. He was 68.
Joe Mathy served four-terms as sheriff, having been first-appointed to fill a vacancy in the office in 1981. The Democrat left office after a 20-year stint. He also served a term as President of the Illinois Sheriff's Association. Mathy then also worked as a Warden for the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne, one son, Jason Mathy; his daughter, Jennifer McMullen, three sisters and 6 grandchildren. The Knapp Funeral in Clifton is handling arrangements. Public Visitation is Monday (10/19 ) 3-7 pm. A Private Funeral Service will be held.
