Juveniles spark weapons cases increase in Kankakee County

Kankakee 3 County is dealing with an increased number of cases involving gun-play. And the Criminal Justice Committee heard from Sheriff Mike Downey that many of the gun violence matters involving juveniles.

"Shots fired cases have increased in recent weeks.  And the investigations show it's juveniloes involved way too often," Downey said.  "Some victims have recovered but the state's juveline laws don't hold these young people for very long."  Lawmakers need to be made more aware of this.

The sheriff reported 8 homicides in the county last year. There have been 5 so far this year, six months in.
