A Memorial Day shooting in Kankakee left a man dead and his nephew jailed for his murder. A press release from Kankakee City Police stated 53-year-old Darrick Smith of Park Forest (IL) was shot and killed Monday. He was pronounced dead at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital.

Police said the shooting happened at a residence on S. Osborn Avenue just before 2 pm. When police arrived, they learned from witnesses that the suspect had left in a vehicle. 38-year-old Joseph Smith was later located and taken into custody without incident. He’s charged with murder.
