Kankakee and Iroquois River Cleanup sparks youth participation

It was the 41st annual Northern Illinois Anglers Association’s Kankakee and Iroquois River Cleanup this past Saturday. And those organizers involved report another good effort. The most positive result was the numbers of young people getting involved in the rivers’ clean-up.

Volunteers totaling 400+ combed the banks of the two rivers picking up litter and other debris. The rivers often are referred to as ‘our most precious resource’ that must be maintained for future generations.

The annual clean-up usually has volunteers removing up to 20 tons of garbage from the waterways. Items removed from the rivers and their banks include old tires, furniture and appliances like washing machines.

Several recreational clubs and fishing enthusiasts meet at several different check-in points to get garbage bags and begin the morning effort to pile up garbage.

Ecology students from area high schools and KCC are regular participants. Refreshments are provided to go along with the fun of cleaning up the environment.
