It's fire prevention week and several area departments along with fire protection districts are spendning time talking about fire education programs. Some departments are hosting open houses while inviting the public to learn more about how they can spread the word about fire safety. Highlights include fire-safety action tours, touch-a-truck demonstrations, visitors can see and feel firefighting gear, and seeing exhibits. Making sure your home has a smoke alarm installed is emphasized.
Car seat installions and car seat checks and ambulance exhibits are also part of education. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is reminding everyone about the importance of creating a home fire escape plan and practicing that plan with the entire family so everyone knows what to do if the smoke alarm sounds. DCFS launched a free statewide program in October 2019 to provide smoke alarms to families served by the department. Illinois law requires every household to have smoke alarms within 15 feet of every bedroom and at least one on each floor of the home.
