Governor JB Pritzker has signed a bill that will block townships from writing their own regulations for wind farms.
Controversy erupted in Douglas County last month when Newman Township voted to require a wind farm company to put more space between turbines and homes. That decision affected how many turbines the company would be able to build. The matter has affected other potential developments too. Too many restrictions isolates progress and causes companies to abandon projects.
This new law puts the power solely in the county's hands.
Douglas County does not have many zoning restrictions on wind turbines. The governor says this change will help create jobs and produce clean, renewable energy. The law takes effect immediately.
