River levels being monitored, flooding occurring on Iroquois River and Sugar Creek

If you’re driving in much of central and east-central Illinois you need to be aware of flooded roadways. The Iroquois and Kankakee rivers and Sugar Creek are posing issues locally. Officials are monitoring the water levels. And motorists are advised to seek an alternate route if you come across water on the roadway.

Some area roads are barricaded and closed. The local waterways will remain above flood stage thru the weekend.
The NWS graphs show the Iroquois River is likely to crest overnight or into Friday morning at 21-feet. That would be 3-feet above flood stage. Other readings show four-feet above flood stage. Sugar Creek also shows a peak at about 3-4 feet above.

The Kankakee River at Shelby, IN will reach two-feet above Saturday. At the Momence reading site, the Kankakee River is expected a foot above flood stage today.

The DNR closed the Kankakee River waterway (Wed) due to dangerous conditions.

People living in the low-land areas are urged to make a move a higher ground if necessary.
