Record flooding has happened too many times in Watseka. And city officials are now taking the necessary steps to mitigate the effects. Creating a natural disaster mitigation plan would be a first step in +finding solutions to curb the problem of flood waters.Most agree, the floods are going to happen. Finding ways to lessen the impact is the first solution to bring some relief.
There’s a buy-out program thru the state. Qualifying standards have to be met. But there are grant monies available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Several people are still looking for answers. And some, who don’t live within the city limits, have voiced their continuing problems in getting answers ?
A meeting Thursday was the first of a series of get-togethers to make sure those applying for the grant help are following the rules.
The Watseka Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee was formed to identify projects that will reduce the impacts to people and property before severe weather strikes. A state grant is picking up the cost for a consultant to complete a hazard mitigation plan. Future meetings are planned.
