Tuesday Storms produce tornadoes and record-size hail in Illinois

The National Weather Service Chicago says at least four tornadoes touched down in Livingston County and Kankakee County in Illinois, as well as parts of Indiana, during Tuesday’s storms.  Officials called the Kankakee County tornado an EF-3, with winds clocked at 150 mph.

The storm also produced hailstones measuring three to five inches in diameter. One hailstone that fell in Kankakee measured six inches in diameter, possibly setting a new state record.

In Aroma Park, several homes were damaged or destroyed. The Kankakee County Sheriff's Office reported up to 10 people were treated for injuries.  Damage assessments are still being compiled.  In Newton County, Indiana two people died in a tornado that struck about 6:30 pm.  At least five other Indiana counties were affected.
