The Kankakee City Council has approved a public safety fee to help avoid lay-offs due to the loss of a sales tax revenue program.

Final approval for the fee came after discussion by council-members. Those residents getting their water from Aqua Illinois till pay a $10 monthly fee. The fee will appear on water bills starting in May.

The fee is being implemented to avoid laying off police and fire personnel. There's an expected budget deficit resulting from the recent court ruling doing away with the sales tax revenue sharing from companies setting up office space in Kankakee.

The City Council also approved an ordinance reinstating a vehicle sticker fee that may get final approval next month.
