Barn fire kills 4-H animals in Newton County

BROOK, IN --- Forty-seven hogs and five goats died in a rural barn fire west of Brook, Indiana in Newton County. The barn was destroyed Friday night. The animals lost were 4-H projects for the upcoming 4-H season.


Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire Chief Kyle Conrad reported the barn owners Ryan and Jennifer Kindig, were home when the fire started.


Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire received the call just before 11:00 pm. Automatic mutual aid was provided by the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department and additional assistance was requested for Goodland and Morocco fire departments. Newton County EMS was on standby at the scene alongside officers from the Brook police department and Newton County Sheriff's Department.


Crews remained on scene until after 1:00 am Saturday morning. Two Brook firefighters received minor injuries due to falls on the ice but did not receive medical attention.
