The federal holiday to remember civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will stretch over three days in Kankakee. Dr. King’s birthday on January 20 includes that day’s Prayer Breakfast in Bradley, an Ecumenical Service and a kick-off event at the Kankakee Public Library.
The local Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation again coordinates three days of events to celebrate the King legacy.
The annual celebration’s kickoff event will be 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, January 18 at the Kankakee Public Library. A movie, kid’s games and refreshments are included.
The First Church of the Nazarene in Kankakee hosts a Gospel Concert on Sunday, January 19 at 3 pm. Several choirs perform. Donations help support youth scholarships.
Events planned for Monday, January 20 include the Interfaith Prayer Breakfast from 7 to 9:30 in the morning at Quality Inn in Bradley. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance for an all-you-can-eat buffet. At 10 am Monday, there’s the Ecumenical Service in Caldwell Chapel AME Zion Church in Kankakee. It features speaker Rev. Carl Randle Sr., pastor of Fair Haven Church of God in Christ.
