Kankakee Community College president Dr. John Avendano says "it's tragic what's happening across the state right now."

Illinois' budget problem has forced Kankakee Community College to cut some programs, downgrade staff and leave vacant positions unfilled.

The community college was set to receive $7 million from the state this fiscal year but hasn't received a penny because of the budget standoff. That's the case for all public colleges and universities in Illinois.

Avendano said "It's impacting people's lives and economic welfare. Even if a budget is passed, we are not expecting to receive any money during this fiscal year."

The changes will go into effect in January.

The KCC Adult Education program, Child Development program and Athletics will be impacted. So will the Commercial Driver's License Training and the Massage Therapy program.

The ALIVE Literacy and Baby Talk programs will be on hold until state funding becomes available.

The college also will reduce its adult education and athletic programs. Adult education classes will only be offered at the North Extension Center in Bradley and Riverfront Campus in Kankakee. The number of classes will be reduced as well.
