Brook, IN man dies in trench collapse

An autopsy is planned today (Monday) to investigate the death of a man Saturday who was buried in a hole. The yet-unidentified man had dug a hole to investigate a leak in a foundation, according to Newton County Coroner Corrie Myers.
Emergency responding agencies answered the call to 505 W. Howard Street in Brook at 6 pm.

The victim was found unresponsive and not breathing. It took the agencies nearly three hours to free the victim from an approximate 10-foot hole.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Foul play is not suspected.

The coroner’s office was assisted by the Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance Service and Sheriff’s Police. Also assisting was a Technical Rescue Task Force, heavy machinery provided by Yoder Drainage and the Rensselaer Street Department and Trench Rescue Specialists from Indiana District 1.
