Watseka home destroyed in Sunday morning fire

Fire destroyed a Watseka home early Sunday morning. But two adults, asleep inside, were able to escape unharmed thanks to an alert Watseka police officer. Detective Ashley Butt was investigating a smell of something burning when she came upon the burning house on Fidler Court. The officer was able to wake the two adults inside, then she called 9-1-1.

Watseka Fire Chief Tim Ketchum said firemen arrived to find smoke coming from the roof and fire was located in the attic space.

Ketchum reported a box alarm alerted engines from Crescent City, Woodland, Milford and Martinton. Then, a water main problem required a second box alarm for water tankers. Fire units from Sheldon, Concord, Donovan and Gilman answered the call.

The residence is a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting the family. The state Fire Marshall is investigating the cause.
