Monday marks a holiday to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual celebrations are planned in Kankakee, Danville, and Champaign.
Other individuals are encouraged to get involved by volunteering. Serve Illinois Executive Director Scott McFarland says Dr. King often asked, ‘What are you doing for others ?”

In Kankakee -- a weekend of events are planned starting with children’s fun at the Kankakee Library. An open house Saturday runs from 10 am ‘til 2 pm. An art contest invites children, adults will read to children, movies and treats will be served.
Sunday features the annual Gospel Fest. And Monday is the annual Prayer Breakfast and Service at Morningstar Church.
Danville’s 2-day weekend celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. begins Sunday with a banquet and wraps up Monday with a parade and community service.
This annual event, organized by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, begins at 4 p.m. Sunday with a scholarship banquet at the Days Hotel in Danville.
The Williams Singers, a gospel group from Indianapolis, will perform during the banquet that includes the presentation of a scholarship to a Danville graduating high school senior who plans to pursue an education at an institution of higher learning.
There’s a $20 admission fee for the banquet. For ticket info, call the Danville Human Relations Department at Danville city hall at 217-431-2280.
On Monday, the celebration will continue with a motorcade and parade that begins at 10:30 a.m. winds thru downtown to St. James United Methodist Church. A celebration service there begins at 11:30 am.
The public is invited to the free service that features the Danville MLK Mass Choir.
