Investigators with the Illinois EPA and Department of Natural Resources are reporting a mid-May chemical discharge in Iroquois County that led to a fish kill has been identified.
Liquid nitrogen was discharged into Coon Creek and then spread about 12 miles to the mouth of Sugar Creek. Officials are calling it an accidental spill. It has been contained.
There’s been no word whether anyone’s being held responsible.
Up to 150,000 fish and other wildlife were killed.
The incident was first reported by officials in Woodland.
The discharge is believed to have occurred near the Indiana state line, between Stockland and Sheldon.
