Momence school district facing cuts

The Momence school board is expected to vote on a reported $441,600 worth of cuts. Teaching staff and sports programs are part of the cuts as the school board considers increasing fees for sports, fine arts and driver's education.

The Daily-Journal is reporting the district has had a deficit budget for the past five years. There's a projected deficit of $300,000 this year. The district is listed on the state's "early warning" profile.

School officials have proposed cutting six teachers, which will save about $348,600.

The board also is looking into moving the district's preschool and special education programs to Je-Neir Elementary School to save on personnel costs. The district has proposed eliminating eight coaching positions, in addition to athletic transportation.

Cutting eight coaches would save the district about $14,000 and would eliminate freshman sports teams.
School officials also proposed raising sports and driver's education fees to generate an additional $29,500 in revenue.
