Update: Woman dies from Kankakee fire injuries

Kankakee fire officials reported (Friday) a woman rescued from a burning apartment unit and airlifted to a Chicago-area burn unit died of her injuries.

The woman was one of two people found by firefighters in a 2nd-floor unit of the Kankakee Kommons Senior Living facility at 155 W. Mertens Street. The building is a 3-story, 100-unit apartment building.

No one else was injured. The fire was contained to that single-unit residence. The fire itself remains under investigation.

Firemen were called at 5:15 Thursday afternoon. Emergency responders found a couple inside the residence.

The woman had suffered second and third degree burns. She died at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood.

The victim’s 79-year-old husband also suffered second degree burns. He remains in the burn unit at Loyola.

Other occupants were evacuated but later were allowed back into their residences.
