America's downtowns need help

The Revitalizing Downtowns Act introduced in Congress would aim to enhance the future of once vibrant commercial and retail spaces.  As more retailers try to recover from the pandemic, local economies are hurting.  Some are feeling the pain much worse than others.

David Downey, President and CEO of the International Downtown Association, says a reduction of commercial space is obvious.  "We need to seize opportunities to rethnk the use of space and consider tax breaks to help even pursue affordable housing," Downey said.

Downy says the legislation would provide for tax credits, which would invigorate American downtowns.  Reimaging America’s downtowns is the aim of pending legislation in Congress.  The legislation would provide for tax credits to revitalize commercial, retail, and even residential downtown spaces.

The Revitalizing Downtowns Act was introduced by U.S. Senator Stabenow of Michigan.
