35th River Cleanup Saturday

Volunteers are welcome for today's (Sat) Iroquois and Kankakee Rivers cleanup.  The annual event is in its 35th year.  The volunteers will comb the banks of the two waterways to remove debris and other junk.  An estimated 25 tons of trash was collected along the rivers last September.

The annual cleanup is sponsored by the Northern Illinois Anglers Association (niaa).  The organization's executive director, J.R. Black, says the cleanup has removed up to 80 tons of trash and river debris.  He says it's about 40-45 tons a year.  Over the 34 years, Black says, that's more than 15-hundred tons.

Seven registration sites are lined up for volunteers to register.  The sites include the Aroma Park boat launch, Kankakee River State Park, Beckman Park, Bird Park, Bradley-Bourbonnais Sportsmen's Club, Momence Island Park, and Shamrock Golf Course.  More info is available at 815-953-6134.
