Federal grants awarded to township fire departments

U.S. Representative Robin Kelly's office announced (Tuesday) that Kankakee and Pilot Township fire departments have each been awarded federal grants to bolster their emergency operations.

The funds come from the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.

Kankakee Township plans to upgrade its extrication equipment. The department is getting a little more than $20,000.

Pilot Township will use its $114,858 grant to purchase air packs; breathing apparatus equipment.

The grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to enhance fire response and other emergency protection.
