Federal, state and local government offices around much of Illinois is closed today in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Classes are canceled at most public schools. There's no mail to be delivered and Metra and CTA is operating on their normal weekday schedules.
Locally, an annual interfaith service was held in Kankakee County. The annual prayer breakfast was held at Quality Inn in Bradley followed by the Ecunemical Service at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Sun River Terrace.
In Danville, the motorcade-parade was at 10 am. The participants paused at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Monement. A church program was at St. James United Methodist Church.
Dr. King would have turned 90 years old today. The civil rights leader was slain by an assassin's bullet in 1968.
