A woman and child were hospitalized Monday afternoon after the SUV they were in left I-55 near Pontiac and ended up in the Vermilion River.

The two were removed from the vehicle by fire personnel. The woman was found on top the vehicle, the child was still inside when emergency crews arrived. The names of the victims were not released. Both were taken to a Pontiac hospital. The child was transferred to Peoria in critical condition.

Illinois State Police said the initial call came at 12:37 p.m. The Hudson Dive Team was called to the scene along with the Pontiac Fire Department.
