Mail scams have Iroquois County residents being warned again. Sheriff's Police want to make people aware following a couple of reports from the Ashkum area.
A mailed letter informs people they've won a cash prize, lottery or sweepstakes. The letter is usually accompanied by a check which the resident is told to deposit into their personal account. The would-be victim is also told to send a portion of that money from the check – either by mail or western union – to cover the 'Taxes" on the "winnings."
However...the checks have proven to be fraudulent. Then, the bank will receive notice that the check is a fraud and it's the resident's responsibility to repay the bank for the money withdrawn from the account.
Authorities advise you --- Don't become a victim !
