A 64-year-old homeless man, who had a beef with his landlord, pleaded guilty to seeting a 2016 fire that led to the deaths of two young brothers. Alex Sawyer is facing between 20-30 yeras when he's sentenced June 25. Sawyer pleaded guilty Thursday in Kankakee Circuit Court.
Sawyer was scheduled to stand trial next week (Monday). He agreed to the plea, according to State's Attorney Jim Rowe. Rowe said it's good to know Sawyer will died behind bars.
Prosecutors said Sawyer was upset with his landlord for not returning his security deposit. The apartment building in the 800-block of W. Station Street was set on fire, chasing 27 people from their living arrangements. Two boys...4-year-old Justice Stewart and 2-year-old JuShaun Watson...died a few days after they were rescued by fire personnel.
