A box-alarm alerted five fire departments Wednesday evening to an un-occupied house in rural Ashkum. No injury was reported. The State Fire Marshall ruled the cause as “accidental.” A garage and the kitchen and utility room were damaged.

Ashkum, Chebanse Township, Danforth, Crescent-Iroquois and Otto Towship departments answered the call. The house is located just off Route 45/52 at Iroquois County Road 2700 N and 1397 E.

Red Cross assists victims after Kankakee fire Thursday ---

Two dogs perished in a house fire at Courtside Plaza in Kankakee Thursday afternoon. No one else was injured. Kankakee Fire Chief Damon Schuldt reported the fire is under investigation.
