WIND FARM REGULATION

Illinois lawmakers are looking to rush through legislation that would change the dynamic of a controversial plan to erect dozens of wind turbines in central Illinois. >>>

The bill has yet to pass House muster, but Illinois’ state Senators discussed it in committee Thursday with the plan to send it quickly for a vote once it’s given to their chamber.

It would restrict wind farm regulations outside of a municipality to the county alone, excluding townships.

Amy Kurt with EDP Renewables, the company looking to build in Douglas County, says allowing smaller governmental units to restrict wind farms could hurt the whole industry.

Residents of Murdock Township in Douglas County are suing to apply tougher restrictions on an EDP wind farm project there.

Mahomet Sen. Chapin Rose saw both sides of the wind farm argument, but said the process to subvert an ongoing court case isn’t something lawmakers should ever do.

The wind farm is scheduled to continue construction this spring.
