Anniversary nears for Amtrak tragedy at Bourbonnais

A special memorial service is planned Saturday (3/16) to commemorate the 1999 Amtrak crash that killed 11 people and injured 126 more in Bourbonnais.

The 1 pm service is at Memorial Gardens at Route 102 and Route 45.

The Daily-Journal headline and photos on March 16, 1999 painted the picture of that devastating day March 15, 1999 – and stirred the Kankakee County community and then-some. The 20-year anniversary still has so many emergency responders talking about that City of New Orleans Amtrak colliding with a semi-trailer truck at the now-closed McKnight Road railroad crossing.

Now 20 years later, police, fire, ambulance and hospital officials still work at bettering communications and improving response skills.
