The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is in the process of replacing the Illinois Route 1 bridge at Milford. But the 75-year-old structure is labeled a "historic structure," so interested organizations with any desire to save the bridge can write IDOT.
IDOT's District 3 office in Ottawa welcomes letters of interest through May 2. Direct comments to IDOT, District 3, 700 E. Norris Drive, Ottawa, IL 61350. Calls can be made to 815-434-8569.
Upon approval, the bridge could be relocated rather than be demolished.
The Route 1 bridge, built in 1939, carries the CXS Railroad over the highway. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The structure is in critical need of repairs. Phase one of the project could begin as early as this fall. Phase two involvers a plan to build a new bridge.
