13-year-old girl drowns; 12-year-old brother missing in Kankakee River

Wilmington Police and Will County Emergency Management are confirming that one 13-year-old Joliet girl has died, and her 12-year-old brother is missing, after a drowning incident along the South Island Park dam in Wilmington.

The Will County Coroner Line reports that 13-year-old Abiyail Arroyo was pronounced dead Monday night at Presence Saint Joseph Emergency Room in Joliet.

Wilmington Police report the youngsters wandered into the Kankakee River and got pulled into the roller current of the dam. Police officers arrived within three minutes, and two Good Samaritans who jumped in to help had to be rescued themselves.

Efforts to locate the 12-year-old boy were suspended due to nightfall and dangerous current. The recovery mission will continue this morning.
