Anhydrous ammonia leak closes rural highway

Officials reported a leak of anhydrous ammonia in rural Benton County, forcing a stretch of highway between Oxford and Boswell to be closed. A cloud alerted emergency agencies. The cloud was formed from a 1,000 gallon tank leaking near 500 E and 200 S Roads.

Anhydrous ammonia is a flammable chemical used in fertilizer.  It can be extremely hazardous.

First responders on scene said no one in the nearby homes had to be evacuated, and there was no immediate threat to the public.

This incident was the second such anhydrous ammonia leak in the immediate area. The Reynolds Co-Alliance Facility in White County, Indiana also reported a leak.
