Bank robbery attempt foiled at Chebanse

A Kankakee man faces charges following his arrest Thursday after a failed attempt to rob the Federated Bank in Chebanse.
36-year-old Anthony Lofu is the suspected person who robbed the bank December 19th, then returned to try it again yesterday morning.

Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said this time, a bank employee locked the door before the suspect-robber could get in.

Lofu was wearing a mask and gloves. He got into a car with a driver and headed north on I-57. Sheriff’s Police report a witness, a Good Samaritan, watched the robbery attempt and provided police with a description of the car, which exited the interstate onto Court Street in Kankakee.

Police did not find a weapon, but say they located a note similar to the one that was used in the December 19 robbery.

Lofu was arrested for attempted bank robbery.

Sheriff Downey praised the bank employee “for preventing an incident, which obviously could have resulted in a great deal of violence."
