Big-time snowfall snarls area travel

The Illinois Department of Transportation was not recommending travel Monday night or early today (Tuesday) after 10-plus inches of snow messed up all area roads. Any travel was considered risky and even dangerous as even the snowplow operators were challenged. Transportation officials reported the snow was “exhausting and just wouldn’t let up.”

Accumulations ranged from six inches to more than 10 in the immediate area. Chicago’s Midway Airport recorded just under 18-inches.

Clean-up continues. Main roads are passable, secondary routes are still snow-packed and drifting snow is still an issue. High winds at 20 mph were keeping rural roads a challenge. Motorists are urged to give snowplow drivers room to clear the roads.

Municipalities remind citizens about the local ordinances to keep routes clear of parked vehicles so plows can get access to the snow. The NWS is still calling for blowing snow, a high of just 15 degrees and wind chills below zero.

Most school districts canceled any in-house learning. Most had virtual and E-learning days.
