'Buddy Check' program push for federal recognition

Resolution supporting American Legions' 'Buddy Check' program passes Illinois House committee. The Illinois House Veterans' Affairs Committee approved a resolution urging the U.S. House of Representatives to make The Buddy Check program a federal program. The Buddy Check program was started by the American Legion in 2019 to help veterans deal with self harm and any other issues they might be dealing with by encouraging legion branches to reach out via phone.

State Rep. Daniel Swanson thanked the American Legion for their work. Swanson also said that this could help save lives in the veteran community. American Legion Buddy Checks has been used throughout the country to help veterans get groceries, medication, transportation, and fulfill other needs.
